From 18 April to 15 May 2026, as part of research project BR28712767 entitled “Study of Ecological, Socio-Demographic, Economic-Geographical, and Paleobiogeographical Aspects of the Urals and Assessment of its Natural Resource Potential”, research fellow A. Kholzan is one of Russia’s largest centres for the rehabilitation, care and breeding of birds of prey. Since 2003, they have been helping injured, sick and orphaned birds of prey to return to the wild. Around 200 birds – eagles, falcons, owls and other rare species live permanently on the 2.5-hectare site in the village of Kashino.
During the placement, tasks were carried out to gain practical experience of the following methods relating to the care of birds of prey at the breeding and conservation centre, covering the following topics: humane methods of caring for birds (including injured birds) at the breeding centre; basic principles of feeding at the bird breeding centre; the use of trained birds of prey; the incubation of birds of prey eggs for further breeding; ringing and pairing for rearing.
