On 5 March 2026, Nariman Turegaliyev, the governor (akim) of West Kazakhstan Region, familiarised himself with the region's preparations for the flood season. To this end, he visited the Baiterek district. The head of the region inspected several facilities and checked how the relevant measures were being implemented. Particular attention was paid to facilities whose condition could affect the safety of populated areas.
During his visit, he familiarised himself with the M. Utemisov Hydrological Station on the Derkul River near the village of Zelenoye in the Baiterek district. This automatic hydrological station was created with the support of the West Kazakhstan Regional Administration as part of the implementation of the scientific programme of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan to establish a Centre of Academic and Research Excellence at the M. Utemisov West Kazakhstan Hydrological Station within the framework of project, titled BR28712767 - “Study of the ecological, socio-demographic, economic-geographical, and paleobiogeographical aspects of the Ural region and assessment of its natural resource potential.”
The Derkul River is considered flood-prone. In spring, it often bursts its banks, posing a threat to nearby settlements. Together with the local government (akimat) of the West Kazakhstan Region and the Department of Emergency Situations of the West Kazakhstan Region, the flood situation in the region is monitored and forecast. This hydrological station makes it possible to monitor water levels, flow rates and water consumption automatically. It is also used for modern scientific research and training future specialists.
This project is the university's contribution to the development of the West Kazakhstan Region, an example of the introduction of advanced technologies and developments in the field of ensuring the region's environmental sustainability.
